Erick Hawkins
“The daring and innovative visions of Erick Hawkins rewrite the rules of what dance can tell us.”
Michael Baryshnikov
Modern Dance Master, Erick Hawkins (1909-1994) was one of the first modern dancers to investigate postural integration and alignment work and to integrate ideokinesis as a fundamental tool in dance training. He studied with Mabel Ellsworth Todd (author of The Thinking Body & pioneer of ideokinesis) as well as with Todd’s disciple Barbara Clarke
The ‘father’ of ‘release’, Hawkins was integrating current popular principles of alignment and imagery into his training as far back as 1951.
Less known in Europe than in the US, he has influenced some of today’s leaders in ‘new dance’ including Andre Bernard and Bonnie Bainbridge-Cohen, founder of BMC, who worked with him for several years and credits his work as one of her major influences.
