Janis Claxton (Aus/UK) is a dancer, teacher and choreographer based in Edinburgh.

Australian Dancer, teacher, choreographer Janis Claxton has been based in the UK since 2000.

For over 20 years she has had an international career including dancing with companies – The One Extra Dance Theatre (Aus), Michael Parmenters Commotion Company (NZ) and an invitation from Erick Hawkins to join his company in New York City (1992) – as well as performing as a solo artist in several countries.

Throughout her career she has been ruthlessly involved in her pursuit to embody and teach ease and freedom in motion and her solo work has been acclaimed for these talents;

Utilising her ongoing movement research, Janis has fostered her own unique training methodology including running Australia’s first alternative dance training program and directing her company Janis Claxton Dance.

In Bristol (2000-2005) Janis ran an extensive independent program of international dance events including performances and workshops.

Her guest teaching has included for Scottish School of Contemporary Dance, Dance Academy Arnhem, Scottish Dance Theatre, Siobhan Davies Dance Company, Dance Base Edinburgh and more.

She recently directed a full-length dance theatre piece for the Uhhuh Dance Company in Wales and has performed her latest solo Blue (a Dance Bristol Commission) at Bristol’s Arnolfini, Royal Opera House2 Clore Studio, Dance Base Fringe Festival, Dance House Wales Millennium Centre Cardiff as part of Dance Live, Aberdeen and Staadtheatre Nuremberg.

Based in Edinburgh, Janis is currently Associate Lecturer at the Scottish School of Contemporary Dance, a regular guest teacher at The Dance Academy Arnhem and Artistic Director of her Edinburgh based company Janis Claxton Dance. She continues her choreographic, performing and teaching work in Scotland, Wales, throughout England and abroad.

  • She was assistant choreographer & rehearsal director with STOMP for the award winning film ‘Is Billy In’ a First Light Production that has toured to film festivals internationally.
  • In 2004- 2005 Janis worked developing kinaesthetic learning programs in schools in Bristol. Funded through Creative Partnerships, she has developed learning programs for Maths, Literacy & Science through Dance, Movement & Body Percussion for Foundation & Key Stage 1.

Brief Chronology

2001

in 2001 Janis created and performed her solo work Burning Centre as part of Resolutions!

2003

In 2003 Janis Claxton created Wild Rose, performed the solo Skin Beyond Skin (Helen Roberts), performed in We Have Eaten Like Birds (Angus Balbernie) and choreographed Cloudland for Travelling Light Theatre Company

Janis Claxton and Co’s premier performance was held at The ICIA (Bath) in May 2003. Featuring Wild Rose (Claxton) and Skin Beyond Skin (Helen Roberts) the program included 24/8 a collaboration with the 24 piece Bath Spa Gamelon Group.

The performance was funded through ACESW.

2004

In 2004 Janis created Rinne and Janis Claxton & Co toured Wilderness. She performed in Angus Balbernie’s On The Lining Of Bees and 51 Solos at The Tobacco Factory and choreographed Clown for Travelling Light Theatre Company.

Wilderness, a full program of works toured to 10 venues in the South West of England and featured Rinne, Wild Rose, Burning Centre and Skin Beyond Skin (Helen Roberts). Funded through ACESW.

On The Lining Of Bees directed by Angus Balbernie, featured Janis Claxton, Clive Andrews and Barbara Schroer and was created for and performed at The Tobacco Factory (Bristol).

2005

In 2005 Janis was commissioned by Dance Bristol to create a new solo work. Blue was premiered at The Arnolfini in November.
She choreographed Pappa Please Get The Moon For Me for Travelling Light Theatre Company

2006

In 2006 Janis choreographed 4 new group works and toured her solo Blue throughout the UK
She was awarded a SAC Professional Development grant to work in New Zealand with choreographer Michael Parmenter.

Blue was performed at The ROH2 Clore Studio (Summer Collection), Dance Base Fringe Festival, The Blue Room – Wales Millenium Centre and The Lemon Tree Aberdeen (Dance Live).

The Son, The Lover & The Holy Spin (Uhhuh Dance Company) premiered at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff in January and was recreated for The Blue Room in the Autumn.

A Soft Place To Fall (Diversions Dance Company, Alternative Routes) toured throughout Wales.

Every Where I Go It Rains Soft Place To Fall (SSCD) was performed at The Space and The Traverse Theatre.

Sweet Love Love, a new work in progress, was premiered at a studio showing at Dance Base, supported through Dance Bristol and Dance Base.

2007

In 2007 Janis performed Blue at the Staatstheater Nuremberg. She choreographed The Lighthouse Keeper for Clive Andrews and is created new solo and group works for Janis Claxton Dance.

The Body Immediate (working title) is a new solo in creation supported through residencies at Dance Base, Dance House and DanceHouse Dublin

Through a commission from Citymoves Janis began the creation of Songs Are Sung and through a SAC Creative Development grant she worked with 4 dancers to expand her research at Edingburgh Zoo towards the creation of several new works.

2008

IN 2008 Sweet Love was developed and perfmed at the ICA in Glasgow. Enclosure 44 – Humans was a huge success winning a Herald Angel Award and shortlisted for a Total Theatre Award at the Edinburgh Fringe festival. JCD will present Falling Light, the company’s premier tour of Scotland accompanied by the Edinburgh Quartet.
